Senators John McCain and Lindsey Graham are calling for the Trump administration to destroy the Syrian government’s air force. These two warhawks have giddily jumped to the assumption that the Syrian government under President Bashar Hafez al-Assad carried out the Sarin nerve gas attack on the town of Khan Sheikhoun in Idlib Province. While this is certainly possible, it is also possible that ISIS rebels may have been responsible. It is well-known that ISIS has captured chemical weapons stockpiles and laboratories that belonged to the Assad government. According to press reports last year, Iraqi and US officials said that ISIS had access to chemical weapons experts that would enable the organization to pursue an aggressive chemical weapons development program. What a wonderful thing it would be for ISIS if the US destroyed the Assad government’s air force. Smells like a ruse to me, and McCain and Graham may be falling for it hook, line and sinker. Is anyone in the US government capable of thinking in anything other than a linear manner?
A ruse in Syria?
