In our ignorant bliss

We have been conditioned to believe that human-made toxic chemicals are harmless to us and that microorganisms such as bacteria and viruses are harmful to us. The conditioning has been effective, even though the message is not entirely correct. There’s just something about those white lab coats that elicits credibility rather than doubt. (Beats me why.) We vastly underestimate the harmlessness of the chemicals, while we overestimate the harmfulness of the microorganisms. We embrace chemicals as are friend and protector, while we fear and reject microorganisms as our enemy. So we proceed to promote and douse and inject ourselves with chemicals and seek to wipe out the microorganisms. And in our ignorant bliss, we endeavor to become sicker and deadlier.
