Building a wall is not much of a “policy.” You wanna know what’s a really awesome illegal immigration policy? Free trade… like NAFTA. The North American Free Trade Agreement between the US, Mexico and Canada has been a boon to Mexico’s economy. So much so that huge numbers of Mexicans who were in the US illegally gladly went back to their home country (… they didn’t really want to be here anyway), because there were jobs for them. Yes, some jobs left the US for Mexico, but it was more than balanced out by the creation of other jobs due to greater access to Mexico’s consumer markets. That’s the way trade treaties work. You win some, you lose some. Wow, isn’t that something.
The reality, though, is that most of the job losses that have occurred in the US during the past couple of decades can be attributed to automation. You know, technological improvements that make production more efficient. Unfortunately, this comes at a human cost. Labor loses. But consumers win, because greater efficiency in production generally means lower costs for consumer items. Hey, so you can buy more… stuff. So, if you want to blame something for jobs going south, blame the robots and American ingenuity, not the trade deals. As for illegal immigration, be thankful for the deals, because otherwise it would be much worse.
