The arrival of managed care in the United States has largely destroyed the “art” of medicine and replaced it with the “business” of medicine. Medicine has been transformed to the point that it really is no longer mostly about healing, curing, but rather about tracking and dispensing. Many healthcare professionals are largely technicians and representatives of the pharmaceutical industry. Their preferred tools of the trade are drugs and Google (yes yes, we know you Google everything like everyone else). There is little or no independent or creative thinking on their part, because they are no longer artists or craftsmen. They are mechanics, and not very good ones at that, because they have limited freedom and time to think and experiment on their own, because there is this strange thing known as “standard of care.” All must abide by it, even when it makes no sense.
Bye bye medicine
