It probably makes more sense for Raul Castro to attend Nelson Mandela’s funeral than Ted Cruz… but not much more. Cruz is a right-wing conservative and Mandela was a leftist revolutionary who was considered a terrorist by those who supported the Apartheid status quo in South Africa. But Mandela was against oppression, notably by a small group elite who possessed all the power and were unwilling to share. That’s what you have under a communist system in Cuba. It’s ironic that both Castro and Cruz, who obviously despise each other, are honoring Mandela. It’s even more ironic that both of them represent precisely what Mandela was against.
