Current US economic pressure on Honduras (… minor as it is) is designed to make a point, to defend the principle of democratic rule. One can disagree with the US interpretation about what happened with the overthrow of Mr. Zelaya. But independent governments are entitled to conduct their foreign policy any way they see fit. The US doesn’t owe anything to Honduras and neither does Honduras owe anything to the US. The US government needs Honduras almost as much as Honduras needs the US government. If the US pulls out of Honduras militarily and permanently cuts off all economic and military aid, then Honduras will become an even more perfect bridge for the entry of illegal drugs from South America into Mexico and ultimately the US market. A large portion of the US population is addicted to illegal drugs. It is an epidemic that is contributing as much or more to to the relative decline of the US as a world power as anything else.
