Communism isn’t the threat

The US government has never officially recognized the Micheletti government. It has been consistent from the start, so cutting US military aid and suspending visas make sense. I guess it depends on how one defines “butting in”. As to communism, it is a thing of the past. The term is used mostly to inject emotion and fear into a conversation. It contributes nothing positive or thoughtful. The primary threat to democratic governments in Latin America come from caudillos and demagogues, just like always. Nothing much has changed because the masses of people in Latin America have always suffered from a lack of education, which means a lack of empowerment and tiny middle classes. This has created corrupt systems throughout the region that are manipulated by either the business classes or unscrupulous dictators. The hope lies in finding something in between, and that can only come through implementing world class education systems.
